Beyond the Sun
A shared sci-fi tech tree where every short turn forces a sharp little choice.
Designed by Dennis K. Chan · 2020
One of the cleanest medium-weight euros out there, as long as you don't need pretty bits to fall in love. It earns its reputation and the repeat plays.
Best for: Euro fans who want depth, tension, and turns that don't drag.
What it is
Beyond the Sun is a space-civilization euro built around a shared tech tree that unfolds as you play. You spend your turns researching technologies, which everyone can then use, and racing out to colonize planets. The hook is the tension. Every turn you want to do two things and only have the juice for one. Dennis K. Chan keeps the turns short and the engine tight, so it moves like a race even though it's a thinky euro.
The catch
Now the honest part. This game is plain. Reviewers across the board call the boards and cards bland, white, and short on art, so don't expect it to wow anyone at the table. It plays best at 2-3 players, because at four the central board gets crowded and someone ends up reading it upside down. The other gripe is replayability: the same Tier 1 techs show up every game, and the objectives feel thin, so it really wants the expansion.
Who it's for
If you came for a gorgeous galaxy on your table, this isn't it, and you'll know that within one round. But if you want a sharp, fast-turning euro where the shared tech tree makes you sweat every decision, it delivers and keeps pulling you back. Shut Up & Sit Down called it dry yet a total joy to play, and that's fair. Bring it out for euro players, not for a casual game night crowd.

A calm little game about birds that tables get weirdly competitive over.
