What it is
Wyrmspan is Connie Vogelmann's engine-builder where you excavate a cave network and lure dragons into it for 1-5 players. If you've touched Wingspan, the bones feel familiar: draw cards, pay costs, tuck creatures into rows, watch a points machine slowly wake up. The twist is the dragons themselves. They carry instant powers, explore powers, end-of-round triggers, and endgame scoring, so a single good one can rewire your whole plan.
The catch
Here's the honest part. This is the heavier sibling, and it asks for real commitment. New players will find Wingspan gentler, and plenty of households keep the original around for exactly that reason. It's also still largely multiplayer solitaire. You're tending your own cave with thin walls between you and everyone else, so if you want players clawing at each other, look elsewhere. And that opening dragon draw can quietly tilt the early game in someone's favor.
Who it's for
But the upside is real, and it's the thing people keep coming back to. Wyrmspan keeps your action count steady across all four rounds, so your engine builds toward a satisfying roar instead of sputtering out like Wingspan's late turns sometimes do. The combos run deeper, the choices feel meatier, and the table looks fantastic. If you loved Wingspan but wished it pushed harder, this is the one. If you wanted something cozier, stick with the birds.
